Starting my journey at the age of eleven years old, I began a new world, MUSIC. Being told that I will "HAVE TO" learn an instrument was scary. Thinking " o.k. how about drums?" My parents said no way, how about an organ? Organ???? Thinking…"well, I didn’t tell anyone so I should be safe". But soon I awoke to the sounds of Deep Purple, Yes, and Pink Floyd… I knew I was moving in the right direction. The first band I joined was called Arrakis. The bassist, Gene Sandel, was a huge influence on me. He showed me how to hear the music, feel the music and create your own music. I can't thank him enough for all those late nights teaching me all those songs. I also saw something else, I saw a real passion for music which rubbed off. So, at the age of fifteen I started playing with Arrakis in local clubs. Talk about an eye opener! Soon we started writing our own songs. What a great experience! My next move was to learn piano. I met a great piano teacher named Gladstone Trot. This guy really knew the piano and he knew jazz in all it's forms, Fusion to Ragtime. Talk about hitting the mark! Gladstone removed all boundaries and taught me to hear the music and to play from the heart not just from what you saw on the sheet music. "Make it your own" he'd say. He would push me to improvise, to play beyond what I was capable of. It all paid off! |
